The Teton County Fair is held in Jackson Hole every year during the last week of July. The fair is full of great events, including free music, a rodeo, pig wrestling, and my favorite, the Figure 8 Races. On the night of the race, thousands gather at the rodeo grounds to bask in the afternoon light, drink beer, and bet with friends on their favorite cars. Teams from around the area are equipped with four cylinder race chariots and compete for prize money, but more importantly, the pride. This is an event where drivers skill, mechanical mastery and luck play equal parts in a team's success. Crashes and carnage are guaranteed.

Mason Bell, the driver for team MacGregor, wins his heat and high fives his team. Taking first place in heat #5, he can sit out the loser’s bracket and repair his radiator, which is cracked after multiple collisions. Bruce Daigle, the team’s mechanic, tells Mason to grab some horse manure and put it in the radiator. Without hesitation Mason runs down the street and picks up a few pies that are laying forgotten on the road like starfish. When he brings them back to the car, everyone laughs; Bruce tells him he just wanted to see if Mason would do it. Nevertheless, he proceeds to push small pieces into the radiator. According to Bruce, the manure will float to the top and help plug any cracks.
As night falls, 8 out of 33 cars have survived to the finals. 20 laps later Moises Navarro Nava, in car #19, takes first place. He and his team celebrate in the middle of the rodeo grounds as fans slowly make their way to the carnival, like so many moths to a flame.
